When victims of injuries have to cope with the consequences of their trauma, it can be overwhelming. For many, the effects of significant injuries extend far beyond the physical and emotional pain that may affect them. Particularly in the case of serious accidents, such as motor vehicle accidents, victims also often have to contend with costly medical bills, lost income from the time needed to recover from their damages, and serious strains on personal relationships.

A Delaware injury lawyer at Morris James LLP, knows just how difficult and traumatizing it can be to suffer from accidents in Delaware at the hands of someone else. From car accidents and truck accidents to defective products to the most tragic of losses, wrongful death accidents, experiencing injuries from another party’s negligence can be devastating. Although nothing can erase the repercussions that accidents have, many accident victims are able to find solace and obtain financial compensation by filing a personal injury lawsuit.

We hope this letter finds you well as we enter the New Year! As you think about what lies ahead in 2014, we would like to share with you information regarding your Underinsured Motorist Coverage that could be beneficial to you and your loved ones.

Underinsured Motorist Coverage is an automobile insurance coverage that you obtain to protect yourself and your family. It is part of your policy that protects you in the event that you are injured by the actions of some other negligent driver.

A new auto insurance law went into effect on January 3, 2014. This new law gives you greater access to your Underinsured Motorist Coverage. The purpose of the new law is to allow innocent victims of motor vehicle collisions to access their own underinsured insurance benefits in circumstances where the victim’s damages are greater than the amount of the negligent driver’s insurance policy limits. The new law was signed by the Governor on July 3, 2013, but only applies to insurance policies issued and/or renewed six months after the signing date.

If you do not have underinsured motorist coverage, you should consider getting the coverage. Ask your agent about the cost of obtaining this very beneficial coverage. If you already have the coverage, talk to your agent about when your policy renews so that you get the full benefit of this new law.

The key to protecting yourself is to review your insurance policy now, make yourself aware of your renewal date, and contact your insurance agent to work out a plan that will allow you to benefit from this new auto insurance law.

We wish you all the best for the year ahead.
